Authorship requirement
Every manuscript must include at least one author who has completed an undergraduate degree in veterinary medicine, animal science or a related field, who acts as guarantor of the work and is identified with a verifiable Lattes CV, professional registration (CRMV) or ORCID profile. Manuscripts authored only by students are not accepted; students must publish with their supervisor or a graduated professional responsible for the work.
Peer review
All manuscripts are screened by the editors for scope, ethics, reporting completeness and similarity. Manuscripts that pass screening undergo double-anonymous peer review by at least two independent reviewers; a statistical or methodological review may be requested. The journal follows the COPE core practices, the ICMJE Recommendations and the EQUATOR Network reporting guidelines (ARRIVE 2.0, STROBE-Vet, CONSORT/REFLECT, STARD, CARE, PRISMA 2020).
Research ethics
Studies involving animals must have been approved by an animal ethics committee (in Brazil, a CEUA under Law 11,794/2008 and CONCEA rules) or equivalent body and reported according to ARRIVE 2.0. Client-owned animals require the owner's informed consent; studies on commercial farms require the consent of the establishment and must meet at least the welfare standards of the applicable legislation; field trials with investigational veterinary products must report the regulatory authorization (in Brazil, MAPA). Work with wild fauna or Brazilian genetic heritage must report the applicable permits (SISBIO, SisGen). Research involving people (questionnaires, interviews, human samples) requires approval by a human research ethics committee (in Brazil, CEP/Plataforma Brasil) and participant consent.
Research data
Authors are encouraged to deposit the data, code and protocols that support their findings in public repositories with a DOI (e.g. Zenodo, Figshare, Dryad, Mendeley Data, GenBank), to provide them as supplementary material or to publish a linked Data Article in NVAS. Every article includes a Data Availability Statement.
Artificial intelligence
AI tools cannot be authors. Generative AI may be used to improve language, with a declaration in the manuscript; it may not be used to generate data, results, interpretations or images, and every reference must be verified by the authors. AI used as a research method must be fully described in the Methods. Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts to AI tools. Details are in the Guide for Authors.
Publication frequency
Continuous publication: articles are published online as soon as they are ready and are grouped into one volume per year.
Open access and licensing
All articles are freely available immediately upon publication under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). Authors retain copyright. Every published article receives a DOI. Posting preprints is permitted.
Publication fees
There are no submission fees. No article processing charge (APC) is charged for manuscripts accepted on or before 31 January 2027. Any APC for manuscripts accepted after that date will be announced in advance on this page, and fee waivers will be available.
